Before K-pop became so famous, there was the first generation of idol groups in Korea. Most of the groups you know these days belong to the third generation of Idol stars. Today I’ll show you five groups who you may or may not know but were popular back in 90s-00s!
Sechskies debuted on April 15, 1997, and is one of the first-generation idol groups in K-pop that became successful among boy groups. The group debuted with six members but two left the group and currently, there are only four members remaining. They also first started the idol fandom culture.
H.O.T is a South Korean boy band that was created by SM Entertainment in 1996. The five members are: Moon Hee-joon, Jang Woo-hyuk, Tony An, Kangta, and Lee Jae-won. They were so famous back then that people say because of H.O.T, SM grew to become a big company. Their fashion, hair style, music, everything became a trend and people would follow them.
You might be familiar with Shinhwa since they are still working as a group. The group debuted back in 1998 with SM Entertainment. Later on, the group made their own agency and most of the members have two labels they work for but all Shinhwa members work under ‘Shinhwa Company’ for group related promotions. I have to say, so far I believe Shinhwa is the best group for their teamwork!
Did you know that Lee Hyo Ri (A.K.A Linda of Ssak 3) was the leader of Fin.K.L? This group was the first successful girl group in Korea. The group debuted in 2018 with four members: Lee Hyori, Ock Joo-hyun, Lee Jin, and Sung Yu-ri. Fin.K.L met in 14 years and filmed a reality camping program called ‘Camping Club’ in 2019. They also held a mini concert for their fans as a 21 anniversary (since debut) gift. There are a lot of funny episodes of the group so if you are interested, let me know!
S.E.S is a South Korean girl group formed in 1997 by SM Entertainment. S.E.S was the rival group of Fin.K.L so they competed often. Later, both groups said they wanted to be friends with each other but due to both fandom, they couldn’t become close friends. S.E.S’s members Sea & Eugene & Shoo are still keeping in touch with each other.
Are you familiar with these groups? Or is it your first time you heard of these names? Latte is horse, we used to follow their fashion and listen to their song with CD players 🙂 What do you think of their looks? Let me know if you know any other groups from k-pop’s first generation.
